People travelling to Summer Solstice are urged to mark the occasion safely and responsibly

Wiltshire Police are urging people preparing to travel to Wiltshire for Summer Solstice to mark the occasion safely and responsibly.

A spokesperson said, “We are aware that some people will want to travel to key sites in the county, such as Stonehenge and Avebury, for the Solstice, which will take place overnight today (20th June 2022) until sunrise tomorrow (21st June 2022).

“Wiltshire Police has been working closely with partners during the build up to the event to ensure the safety of those who wish to attend.

“We would urge people to visit the websites and social media channels of both English Heritage (Stonehenge) and the National Trust (Avebury) for the latest information.

“People should also be aware that Wiltshire Council has closed The Ridgeway at Overton Hill to vehicles until 30t June, and that the High Street in Avebury will also be closed to anyone other than residents from 6am today until 12noon on Wednesday.”

Superintendent Conway Duncan, from Wiltshire Police added, “We know that Summer Solstice is a very important date in the calendar for many people, who will be planning to travel to Wiltshire to mark the occasion.

“Due to the pandemic, this is the first time in a few years that people will be able to return to Stonehenge for Solstice and we have been working hard to ensure the safety of everyone involved.

“Please make sure you are aware of any parking restrictions, road closures and travel plans in advance to minimise disruption for yourself and other attendees.

“We would urge everyone to act responsibly and enjoy Summer Solstice in a safe and positive way.”
