John Glen appointed Chief Secretary to the Treasury

Salisbury’s MP, John Glen, has been appointed as the new Chief Secretary to the Treasury.

The announcement came from Downing Street this evening (25th October 2022) as the new Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, appoints his Cabinet.

The Chief Secretary is responsible for public expenditure. Some of Glen’s new responsibilities will include:

  • spending reviews and strategic planning
  • efficiency and value for money in public service
  • public sector pay and pensions
  • infrastructure spending
  • housing and planning
  • women in the economy
  • skills, labour market policy and childcare policy, including tax-free childcare
  • tax credits policy
  • state pensions/ pensioner benefits

Commenting on his appointment, John said, “This is a tremendous honour and I recognise the enormous responsibility that comes with this position, particularly as I will now be attending Cabinet.

“Although I will be very focussed on my new role in the Treasury, I remain unwavering in my commitment to Salisbury and will continue maintain a high level of engagement with constituents and the concerns they raise.”

Previously, Glen was the Minister of State (Economic Secretary) to the Treasury between 17th September 2021 and 6th July 2022. He will take over from Edward Argar.
