The feel-good factor: Local family fundraises for haircuts for Ukrainian refugees

A client of Muse Hairdressing is raising funds for Ukrainian refugees who may wish to have their hair done once they arrive in the UK.

Rachel Whitelock and her family welcomed their Ukrainian guest on the 26th of April 2022. Before arriving in the UK, she had spent weeks living in war, escaping on evacuation trains, and she spent a week in a Polish refugee centre before finally receiving her visa allowing her to travel to the UK.

“It occurred to me that people arriving here have not had access to hairdressers for some time and I wanted to organise something enjoyable for them to look forward to,” said Rachel.

In a bid to raise some funds for a hair treatment at Muse Hairdressing, Rachel set up a Go Fund Me Page for a Haircut and Colour for refugees.

“A haircut will not only make them feel more comfortable but bring them confidence when out socialising and applying for jobs etc. Lois at Muse Hairdressers in Salisbury has also very generously offered a free conditioning treatment and luxury samples for our guests.”

The fundraiser has already raised £375 with extra donations going towards hairdressing services for other refugees arriving in Salisbury through Muse Hairdressing.

Salon owner Lois Mant said, “It would be so nice if we can help more people that are guests in people’s houses because I think we all know from lockdowns how having your hair done makes you feel. We really wanted her to feel confident when going to job interviews and it’s a lovely idea.

“I am thrilled that our client wanted her to come to us and it would be amazing if it can grow and we can help as many people as we can. There’s £40 in vouchers in the till waiting for someone to use and we have already got some more donations coming in.”

Rachel added, “Our guest had her first hair appointment with the wonderful Muse Hairdressing and the joy this gift brought to her cannot be underestimated, it really did lift her.

“The remaining donations have been left with Muse to be used for other individuals. All additional funds will now solely go to helping new refugees having something special to look forward to at Muse Hairdressing.”
