Singing for Lung Health boosted by Co-op funds

A local not-for-profit group has been boosted by funds raised by Salisbury’s Co-op stores community fund initiative.

Salisbury Co-op shoppers have raised a phenomenal £1714.55 for local organisation Sounds Better CIC which will be used to support one of the organisation’s popular ‘Sing and Breathe’ courses.

The courses are a six-week introductory course to singing for better breathing, which begins on 22nd February at the Bemerton Heath Centre.

Sounds Better Co-director, Liv McLennan, celebrated alongside other local good causes at the Castle Road store before Christmas and said: “We are so grateful to Salisbury Co-op shoppers for raising this significant amount of money. We will be supporting people living with breathlessness, lung conditions and long covid through our introductory course, which we deliver alongside local Parish Nurse Rose Maylin.”

Sounds Better have been running Singing for Lung Health in Salisbury since 2017 after being trained by the British Lung Foundation, and started to develop the course in 2018. They switched to online delivery during the pandemic and now offer a hybrid face-to-face and online attendance option.

The next course will run every Wednesday 10:30 am – 12 pm at the Bemerton Heath Centre from 22nd February – 29th March, offering a fun approach to better breathing techniques, with accompanying resources and videos to support people between sessions.

Hayley, a previous course participant, highly recommends trying it out: “before the course, I couldn’t walk up a small nearby slope without having to stop to recover, but I can now. I can certainly hold a note for much longer than I could at the start. Highly recommended!!”
