Salisbury schools to throw Deputy Head out of a plane

Two Salisbury schools are set to throw their Deputy Head, Mr Ramsay, out of an aeroplane later this month.

Mr Ramsay, who is the deputy head teacher across both Wyndham Park Infant and St Mark’s Junior schools, was set the challenge by the respective parent groups.

Wyndham Park Infant School Association and Friends of St Mark’s came up with the idea as one of the parents is a jump instructor and knew Mr Ramsay loves a challenge.

The big jump happens on the morning of Sunday, 19th November, at around 10:30, depending on weather conditions. GoSkyDive at Old Sarum is responsible for looking after the jump.

Mr Ramsay is jumping from 10,000 feet, resulting in a 30-second ground-rushing freefall experience. He’ll enjoy the gorgeous views of prehistoric sites on the Salisbury Plains during the five-minute parachute ride.

Mr Ramsay is well known to most of the children and their families across both the schools, having taught the current year six pupils when they were in his reception class, or he has been their deputy head teacher as they have come through Wyndham Park.

Mr Ramsay (Barry to those outside of school) is known for his love of fun and especially his love of Christmas. He has a large array of Christmas Jumpers, with a different jumper worn on each day of December in the build-up to the big day.

The jump is to raise money for a covered area for the Year 1 class at Wyndham Park and Forest School space for St Marks. They have a target of £2000 to reach.

Salisbury Radio spoke to Mr Ramsay about the jump; he told us: “Initially, when it was suggested it was an immediate yes, but not as the date gets closer, I am feeling a bit more nervous. It is on my bucket list of things to do – my sister has done it, so it will be good to level that up.

“It’s 30 seconds of freefall, and then we see what happens after that. At least I know the person I am jumping with; knowing them helps.

“I’m looking forward to the freefall. I have done some work with drones, so I have seen those views before. It’s nice as the children regularly see people jumping from the planes up at Old Sarum, and I believe some will come up and watch, which will be nice.”
