Salisbury Giant needs your help to get out and about

Could you be part of a new team of ‘Whifflers’ that is being put together to help get the Salisbury Giant and Hob-nob out and about this year?

The team responsible for looking after the Salisbury Giant (Christopher) and Hob-nob, who are being relocated to Salisbury Arts Centre, are looking for more helpers who can take part in taking them out and about in the city for occasions like St George’s Day.

It’s a tradition that dates back to the 15th century, with many in the city having memories of the Salisbury Giant being present at many civil occasions.

Paul Sample, part of the team looking after the Salisbury giant, told Salisbury Radio, “Christopher and Hob-nob have been a big part of our City’s history since at least the 15th Century – maybe earlier.

“Each year, we need a big team of helpers – or Whifflers as they are known – to get the show on the road.

“I’m looking for volunteers to help with looking after Christopher, carrying Hob-nob at events, banging the drum and carrying his Sword, Mace and Staff.

“This work used to be done by butcher apprentices. Today, it can be done by anyone. It’s an opportunity to get involved with maintaining our City’s ancient traditions.”

Can you help and get involved?

The events this year start with:

  • Sunday 28th April 2024 – St George’s Day (AM) – procession from The Guildhall to St Thomas’s Church (and return), and then take part in the St George’s Day festivities.
  • Saturday 11th May 2024 – Mayor-Making (AM) – procession from The Guildhall to St Thomas’s Church (and return).
  • Saturday 11th May 2024 – After Mayor-Making, we are invited to take part in Sarum Morris’s Day of Dance in the centre of the City and in the Cathedral Close. Sarum Morris has promised that there will be several guest sides.

If anyone can help, please contact Paul either by phone, 077 1818 5039, or email
