Salisbury District Hospital takes sustainability step

Salisbury District Hospital has cleared the first hurdle towards introducing geothermal heating into the hospital.

Wiltshire Council have given the go-ahead for survey work to start to establish the feasibility of using geothermal energy.

Subject to finalising details with landowners, the feasibility survey will finish in Spring 2024.

The principal contractor, GT Energy, will conduct the survey.

Chief Financial Officer Mark Ellis, who is the Trust Net-Zero lead, said, ā€œThe hospital is on an ambitious sustainability journey. Projects such as our geothermal initiative are an important part of how we deliver a sustainable future for the hospital and the next generations.

All being well, we will begin work on accessing the geothermal energy in 2026. It is hoped that if the project is successful, the geothermal power will mean the hospital could be up to 75% off grid.
