John Glen continues to back Rishi Sunak as the next PM

Since Liz Truss’s resignation, Salisbury’s local MP John Glen has taken to Twitter to show his continued support for Rishi Sunak as the next Prime Minister.

In a statement outside Downing Street yesterday (20th October 2022) Truss said she could not deliver the mandate on which she was elected as Tory leader and was therefore resigning as leader of the Conservative Party.

Her resignation comes just 44 days after taking over from Boris Johnson, making her the shortest-serving prime minister in history.

When Johnson resigned in July, John Glen backed Sunak who visited Salisbury to meet local members of the Conservative party.

Now, Glen has taken to Twitter to show his continued support for the former chancellor.

Yesterday, Glen Tweeted, “Rishi Sunak is the most qualified candidate to provide leadership to navigate through the deep economic challenges we face. He will deliver stability, growth and prosperity and unite our country.”

In a more in-depth statement shared on Twitter today, Glen said:

He continued, “This country faces unprecedented economic challenges. We need a Prime Minister who fully grasps the multi-dimensional complexity of the issues and can fix them with intelligence, care, and clear resolve.

“I very much hope that if Rishi Sunak is elected he will retain the services of Jeremy Hunt who in seven days has started calming markets and brought professionalism and stability to the Treasury.

“I recognise the many qualities of Boris Johnson as a communicator and as someone who led us to a historic general election victory nearly three years ago. His success with vaccines and leadership on Ukraine will never be forgotten.

“The world is now a very different place post-covid. This election is not about who has the most engaging or amusing personality. We need to restore confidence in the Conservative Party’s reputation for economic competence while putting first the interests of the most vulnerable.

“Boris Johnson was removed for a reason. Those issues have not changed and we must look forward and not back.

“Rishi believes in fully honouring the 2016 decision to leave the EU, and we must deliver on resolving issues around trade and immigration. We need to build strong, trusting relationships with our allies at a time of grave risk to the world’s economy and security.

“I have seen Rishi’s seriousness of purpose, capabilities, and commitment to put the nation’s interests above his own. I know that he will put together a government drawing on all traditions within the Conservative Party.

“Rishi’s primary virtue is his complete reliability. I have every confidence that under his leadership he can put the country back on the path to stability, growth, and prosperity.”

Truss will remain as Prime Minister until a new leader is successor has been chosen.

Nominations for the next Conservative Party leader and PM are now open and will close at 2pm on Monday 24th October. The process is hoped to be concluded by the 28th of October.
