Dementia-friendly matinees launched at Everyman, Salisbury

A series of monthly dementia-friendly matinees have launched at the Everyman cinema in Salisbury.

Specifically designed for the over 60s and those living with dementia, the cinema lights are left low so that guests feel comfortable moving around if needed, with the surroundings especially suitable for the older cinema lover.

The first matinee was held earlier this month, welcoming local older people, particularly those living with dementia, to accompany their families or carers and enjoy a showing of the movie ‘Shall We Dance’.

The screenings are being organised by a local home care company, Home Instead.

Jonathan Gapper, Managing Director of Home Instead Salisbury and Romsey commented: “It’s such a pleasure to be able to sponsor such special sessions at the Everyman theatre. It’s important that we make such joys in life such as going to the cinema, accessible to all, including those living with dementia. I’m really proud to be part of this. The first event was a huge success with around 50 people coming along to enjoy an afternoon in front of the silver screen”.

The matinees include a complimentary tea or coffee and are free to attend. A charitable donation is welcome, with all donations made to Silver Salisbury, a local charity whose aim is to reduce loneliness and isolation by supporting older people to be active in their local community.

Members of the local community enjoying their trip to the cinema

Speaking of the initiative, Irene Kohler, Chair of Silver Salisbury commented: “Thanks to our local community who came along to the first event, we were able to raise an amazing £139.85! Going to the cinema is such an enjoyable experience so we’re really grateful that the Everyman and Home Instead are providing a way for older people in our community, particularly those with dementia, to enjoy this activity in a way that feels comfortable to them”.

Philip Bendall, Manager at the Everyman added: “Being able to host such special matinees in our cinema is a real pleasure, it’s great to see so many local people come and enjoy a great film, a hot beverage and the company of others. We look forward to the next one!”.

The next screening is Tuesday 5th March at 1 pm at the Everyman Cinema, 17 Endless St, Salisbury SP1 1DP, when the matinee will be Forest Gump. All are welcome and there is no need to pre-book, however priority will be given to those living with dementia and their families or carers.
