Dean of Salisbury becomes Deputy Lieutenant of Wiltshire

His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Wiltshire, Mrs Sarah Troughton, has appointed five new Deputy Lieutenants to serve Wiltshire.

The new Deputy Lieutenants are:
• Mr. Mohammed Makram Ali, DL
• Mrs. Josephine Del Mar, DL
• Mrs. Rachel Gowshall, JP, DL
• The Very Reverend Nicholas Papadopulos DL, Dean of Salisbury
• General Sir Nick Parker, KCB, CBE, DL

Deputy Lieutenants are appointed to support the Lord-Lieutenant and the work of the Lieutenancy.

There are around 35 Deputy Lieutenants from a variety of backgrounds who live in communities across Wiltshire and Swindon. The role of Deputy Lieutenant is voluntary, and those who undertake the role receive no remuneration or expenses.

HM Lord-Lieutenant of Wiltshire, Mrs Sarah Troughton, said: “I am delighted to appoint five new Deputy Lieutenants for Wiltshire. They all bring individual experiences from their different communities and areas, and it is a pleasure welcoming them to the team”.

Of the five selected, one is based in Salisbury. The Very Reverend Nicholas Papadopulos, Dean of Salisbury, will join Dr Phil Harding and others who live in around the City as Deputy Lieutenants.

Deputy Lieutenant, The Very Revd Nicholas Papadopulos, said: “I am honoured to have been appointed one of His Majesty’s Deputy Lieutenants for Wiltshire and look forward to this new opportunity to serve our community”.

The Very Revd Nicholas Papadopulos has served as Dean of Salisbury since 2018, chairs Salisbury Cathedral’s governing Chapter, and is responsible for its worshipping life, hospitality to visitors, and programme of events and activities.

Before his ordination, he worked as a barrister specialising in criminal law. In previous roles, he has been a Canon of Canterbury Cathedral and the vicar of a central London parish.

He has also worked in Wiltshire, when, from 2002 to 2007, he was Senior Chaplain to the then Bishop of Salisbury.
