Breakfast and banter: Armed Forces & Veterans Breakfast Club aim to boost membership

The success of, and public interest in, the Secret Spitfires story and Memorial has inspired the Salisbury and Amesbury branch of the Armed Forces and Veterans Breakfast Club to launch a fresh appeal for new members.

The group, which meets monthly at the White Hart Hotel in Salisbury and Evergreen Court in Amesbury, consists of over 420 veterans and serving members of Her Majesty’s Armed Forces.

The group provides practical support, advice, comradeship, breakfast and banter. Members of the group also regularly volunteer at community events, including the Inauguration of the Secret Spitfires Memorial.

To kickstart the drive for new members, Salisbury RFC will host a cocktail party to celebrate the Battle of Britain anniversary and the Secret Spitfires on the 18th September 2021.

Expect a magical night of 1940’s antics complete with a spectacular Spitfire firework display, live music from Sticky Toffee Jazz, raffles, and entertainment.

It is hoped that the Battle of Britain Cocktail Party will not only kick-start the recruitment drive but also encourage the military to come together to celebrate the Battle of Britain’s postponed 80th anniversary, and the Secret Spitfires of Salisbury.

The event is open to all and will have a 1940’s theme. Tickets are £18.50, with the price including a cocktail on arrival and buffet supper. The proceeds will be split equally between the AFVBC and Secret Spitfire Charity to aid them in the maintenance of the memorial and develop a programme of wider education.

The organisation’s Lead Admin, Andy Heath commented: “The last two years have been incredibly hard for everyone, and many of those with a military background have their own unique challenges to contend with too.

“Salisbury, Amesbury and indeed the whole county of Wiltshire has such a huge military presence and we wanted to let everyone know that we are here, ready and waiting to provide support, company and fun to any veterans or serving military personnel who’d like to join us.”
