The BBC are filming at Salisbury Cathedral today: Here’s why

BBC filming trucks were spotted by residents outside Salisbury Cathedral this morning.

Filming is set to start on Saturday for the BBC's Song’s of Praise, but the trucks were actually filming another aspect of the iconic religious TV show, the Young Chorister of the Year Award.

The competition, organised by the BBC and Avanti Media Limited, and run jointly by BBC Songs of Praise and BBC Radio 2, sees singers battle it out to be named Young Chorister of the Year.

To enter, singers had to apply by uploading two short videos, one showing a performance of a Christmas carol or song, and the other a sacred song in any musical style, such as a hymn, a classical choral solo, a spiritual or inspirational song, anthem, aria, gospel or worship song.

A shortlist of singers is then created by the panel and music producers from both TV and radio, who select 5 boy entrants and 5 girl entrants to take part in the semi-finals.

The semi-finals consist of a girl’s heat and a boy’s heat. Each singer performs one song and a panel of judges choose three boys and three girls to go through to the TV and radio final which will be broadcast on BBC1 and Radio 2.

The winner receives a trophy and the opportunity to perform on Songs of Praise which is being filmed at Salisbury Cathedral on Saturday 23rd October 2021.
