Shopping in Salisbury as Government announces new COVID rules

On Saturday 27th November, the Prime Minster announced a tightening of COVID-19 restrictions. From 4am today (Tuesday 30th November) face coverings will be compulsory in shops and other settings such as banks, post offices and hairdressers.

They must also be worn on public transport. However, the changes won't include hospitality settings.

The government has said these are "precautionary measures" against the Omicron variant of coronavirus which was first detected in South Africa last week.

Speaking to Love Salisbury, Salisbury BID (Business Improvement District) said they would like to remind shoppers of the change and to urge everyone to stick to the new rules.

Salisbury shops have made a lot of changes over the last few years to make sure they adhere to restrictions and keep customers and staff safe.

For those who are still concerned, there are days of the week and times that are quieter in Salisbury city centre so could be an ideal time to do some Christmas shopping without as many people around.

Footfall trends show that Monday and Wednesday afternoons are less busy.

There is easy access for vulnerable shoppers with all car parks accessible 7 days a week and disabled parking throughout the city centre. Wiltshire Council run car parks in the city centre are also free each Sunday.

Some Salisbury independent businesses are also offering private appointments or shopping as a small group, for those who would prefer it. Contact the shops direct to find out more details on their offerings.

Robin McGowan, Chief Executive of Salisbury BID, said, “Salisbury residents have offered amazing support to our local business community at a time when they really needed it, and they need it still. Our shops are following all Government safety guidance but customers are also reminded they have a part to play too. Please adhere to the rules and together we can experience Salisbury and Christmas in a safe way.”

The BID has produced a new poster for businesses, that can be used to highlight the tighter restrictions to customers. This can be downloaded from their website here.
