Salisbury Soroptimists ask for donations of "gently used bras" to be sent to those in need

The Soroptimists of Salisbury are asking women to turn out their drawers and donate gently used bras.

Last year the local group collected 2,300 bras which were transported to Smalls for All in Edinburgh by one of their members. This year, the group has decided to support a charity which is based closer to Salisbury.

"We have decided to support a similar charity the 'Afreebra initiative'. The
donated bras will be sent to African countries where they will be given to local
women who would otherwise not be able to afford such garments," said a spokesperson for Salisbury's Soroptimists.

According to the group, most of the bras go to Ghana and are distributed by the Rural Smile Foundation; They have a ‘Queen Mother’ system, where a senior local woman is responsible for distributing bras to women in her community.

In Zambia, there is a book charity which offers a free bra to mothers as an
incentive to bring their children to the book club. The aim is to increase
literacy. Some go to the DRC where they are distributed by church groups.

"Wherever they end up, your pre-loved bra will be used and appreciated by
another woman."

You can drop your clean, unwanted bras at Five Rivers Leisure Centre or 60
Endless St or pass to a Soroptimist friend.

Donations should be made by Friday 1st July after which they will be sorted and passed to the charity.
