Salisbury Hospital’s Maternity Team has been celebrating the 100th anniversary of the opening of a new maternity ward at Salisbury General Infirmary.
The celebrations for the Beatrice Ward were led by Abi Kingston, Clinical Director of Women and Newborn, and were joined by the Chief Nursing Officer Judy Dyos and colleagues from across the Maternity Team.
Abi Kingston said, “This is a fabulous achievement. It’s a great day to reflect on where we’ve been and think about the next 100 years of Beatrice Ward.”
The ward was named in recognition of the great interest taken in its foundation by both the Countess of Pembroke, Beatrice Eleanor Herbert, and the Dowager Countess of Pembroke, Beatrix Louisa. The Earls of Pembroke held the role of President of Salisbury Infirmary at the time.
The full history of the opening of the Beatrice Ward, which pre-dates the NHS by 26 years, is on the Salisbury Healthcare History website.
