Salisbury City Council meet with Police and Crime Commissioner to talk CCTV, additional officers and options for a police station

Earlier this week, (Monday 14 February 2022) Salisbury City Council’s Leadership Group met with the Police and Crime Commissioner, Philip Wilkinson at Salisbury Guildhall.

The Commissioner and councillors (Annie Riddle, Ian Tomes and Victoria Charleston) reportedly had a wide-ranging discussion about policing matters affecting the residents of Salisbury, including the allocation of additional police officers to Salisbury, options for a Salisbury police station and funding for CCTV in the city.

Councillor Victoria Charleston said, “We were delighted to welcome the PCC to the Guildhall. He shared some of his concerns and ideas about a new police station for Salisbury, and listened with interest to our comments.

"We were also able to promote the value of CCTV in the city and ask him to consider further funding from his budget for this key service in the city. We look forward to meeting him again in a couple of months’ time to see what progress has been made on these issues.”

Last month, Love Salisbury shared calls from local businesses for there to be more CCTV coverage in the city. The councils revenue budget for the financial year 2022/23 saw no additional funding for CCTV, but £30,000 has reportedly been allocated in the 2024/25 budget for more cameras.

Salisbury City Council is always seeking further volunteers to monitor and operate the digital CCTV and radio system, joining a team of existing volunteers.

The volunteers monitor the CCTV system at key times in the communications hub inside the CCTV control room at Bourne Hill. This is a substantial role which takes a high degree of commitment as there is a lot to learn but is extremely important and rewarding.
