Home care company celebrates the ongoing success of dementia-friendly cinema

Local home care company Home Instead Salisbury and Romsey is celebrating the ongoing success of its dementia-friendly matinees at the Everyman Cinema in Salisbury.

The matinees, which launched earlier this year, have been such a success that the home care company now has matinees booked in for the rest of the year.

They screen classics such as My Fair Lady and Driving Miss Daisy in a dementia-friendly environment.

Specifically designed for the over-60s and those living with dementia, the cinema lights are left low so that guests feel comfortable moving around if needed. The surroundings are especially suitable for the older cinema lover.

A great day out at the Everyman cinema for a dementia-friendly matinee!

Since launching in February, the matinees have welcomed over 300 visitors and raised over £500 for Silver Salisbury, a local charity that aims to reduce loneliness and isolation by supporting older people's involvement in their local community.

Jonathan Gapper, Managing Director of Home Instead Salisbury and Romsey, commented: “We’re delighted with how successful our dementia-friendly matinees at the Everyman cinema have been. To regularly be welcoming 50-60 people along to each session and seeing the enjoyment watching a classic movie in a comfortable environment brings, is truly wonderful”.

Speaking of the initiative, Irene Kohler, Chair of Silver Salisbury commented: “Thanks to our local community who have really got behind this initiative and made it such a success! With over £500 raised in donations, we’re so grateful”.

Philip Bendall, Manager at the Everyman, added: “Being able to host such special matinees in our cinema has been wonderful. We now have a full schedule for the rest of the year and look forward to welcoming many more members of our community through the doors!”.

The next screening is Tuesday 6th August at 1pm at the Everyman Cinema, when the matinee will be Cool Runnings.

All are welcome and there is no need to pre-book, however priority will be given to those living with dementia and their families or carers.

The matinees include complimentary tea or coffee and are free to attend. Charitable donations are welcome, and all donations are made to Silver Salisbury.
