Harnham Water Meadows Trust are to receive a special tree from The Queen’s Green Canopy which played a prominent role in the Platinum Jubilee celebrations.
350 trees made up the "tree of trees" which stood tall outside Buckingham Palace as a message of hope, regeneration and optimism to the nation and the world.
Three trees were awarded to Wiltshire Council and Swindon Borough Council, who join over 300 UK organisations as recipients.
Other Wiltshire recipients include the volunteers from Swindon’s vaccination programme and The John of Gaunt School in Trowbridge.
Gabrielle Edwards, Chair of Harnham Water Meadows Trust said, "It was with enormous pleasure that I learned from Peter Pleydell-Bouverie that the Harnham Water Meadows Trust has been one of only three organisations in Wiltshire to be awarded one of the tree saplings that had made up the Tree of
Trees outside Buckingham Palace for Her late Majesty the Queen’s Jubilee. It is a huge honour for us.
"What is particularly pleasing is that it is a multi-stemmed Alnus glutinosa which is ideal for water meadows."
Presented by the Lord-Lieutenant of Wiltshire, Mrs Sarah Troughton, the trees will be planted at ceremonies to be held this Autumn.
The trees will arrive in a pot embossed with Her Late Majesty’s cypher and will become part of the living legacy in honour of Her Majesty, joining over a million trees already planted across the UK as part of The Queen’s Green Canopy.
Mrs Troughton said, “I am delighted that Wiltshire and Swindon been chosen to receive the trees (two Alnus glutinosa [alders] and a Betula pendula [weeping birch]) from the Queen’s Green Canopy “Tree of Trees” and am proud to become part of this project to honour Her Late Majesty in our county.
“I much look forward to attending the planting ceremonies this Autumn, and I hope that these trees, plus the trees which were already planted in the county as part of The Queen’s Green Canopy, are enjoyed by everyone in the local community as a symbol of hope and regeneration for many years to come.”
Gabrielle added, "We look forward to a planting ceremony with the Lord Lieutenant in November. We had planted five trees on the Meadows last Spring a part of the Queen’s Green Canopy."
