Connor Pool sentenced for the death of Freddie Fontete-Jones

Connor Pool has been sentenced to 9 years at Winchester Crown Court for causing the death of Freddie Fontete Jones.

Whilst summeriseing, Judge Morris said that she isn't satisfied that Pool is dangerous and doesn't not consider an extended sentence in prison to be justified and that Pool will not be imprisoned for life.

She also noted that Pool had no previous relevant convictions but did also speak of his 'cynical' actions in the first instance after the unprovoked attack, though finally taking responsibility for his actions five months later.

The sentence is a 12-year sentence, reduced by three years and a surcharge of £190 to fund victim services. He will serve a minimum of 6 years in prison.

Connor Pool, who admitted the manslaughter of Freddie Fontete-Jones, was due to be sentenced on 3rd November 2022, but it was delayed until Friday, 3rd February 2023.

As a result of Pool’s actions, Freddie sustained a traumatic brain injury from which he never recovered.

Detective Chief Inspector Simon Childe, from the Major Crime Investigation Team, said: "Pool’s actions were both callous and reckless and have c ompletely devastated Freddie’s family, many friends and local community and I know his loss will be felt for many years to come. Our thoughts remain with Freddie’s family today.

"Sadly, this case highlights just how devastating one punch can be. A split second decision to act in a violent way can destroy lives. Your actions can cause complete devastation and a lifetime of regret. We’d urge people to really think hard about their decisions when consuming alcohol on a night out – think about what triggers you and what you can do to prevent your feelings from escalating. If you ever find yourself in a situation which has the potential to escalate into violence, please – walk away.

“From the very beginning, this was a fast-paced investigation, with multiple witnesses to interview in order to ascertain the circumstances leading up to the assault. Both the local uniformed officers who were called to the incident and those from the Major Crime Investigation Team who have subsequently been involved in the investigation have been dedicated and diligent throughout and I would like to thank them all for their efforts in securing justice for Freddie’s family.”

Freddie was a much-loved member of the community and is fondly remembered by his family, friends, former colleagues, and his football family at Laverstock & Ford FC.

Over £35,000 was raised in his memory to help support his family.
