Every year, on or around Midsummer's Day, Naomi House & Jacksplace gives 12 red roses as a peppercorn rent to their landlords, Naomi and David Cornelius-Reid. This tradition dates back to before Naomi House first opened in 1997.
This year, one of the red roses presented to Naomi was a beautiful hand-crafted metal rose. This rose marks the launch of Naomi House & Jacksplace’s brand new ‘Garden of Roses’ fundraising campaign. The charity has teamed up with local blacksmith, Lucille, of ‘Little Duck Forge’, to invite supporters and the public to be part of this special tradition and donate to receive a rose of their own.
The roses are hand crafted with locally sourced materials and are galvanized, coated in zinc, which provides enhanced corrosion resistance. Each rose takes around 30 minutes to make and even longer to paint.
Before supporters can take the rose home to enjoy, they will be part of a display in the Winchester Cathedral Refectory Courtyard. The display will be held between 7-15th September and is free to view.
Lucille Scott, Blacksmith at Little Duck Forge said: “I love that I am getting to work with an incredible charity to provide something that is produced locally to a high quality and will last a long time. I had the opportunity to visit the hospices recently, and I saw the great value that families get from Naomi House & Jacksplace.”
Paul Morgan, Director of Fundraising and Communication said: “I am delighted to share our Garden of Roses campaign. Naomi House & Jacksplace provides outstanding care for over 500 families because of the incredible support from the community. This campaign is a great way for people to celebrate their local hospices for children and young adults and become part of a very special tradition.
"I would like to thank Lucille for her contribution in designing and making the beautiful roses, they will look incredible in the display in September. Every rose helps us be there for children, young adults and their families on the good days, difficult days and last days.”
