Ayckbourn's A Chorus of Disapproval offers welcome light relief

Salisbury Playhouse's production of Alan Ayckbourn's A Chorus of Disapproval is a funny, well-put-together play that provides light relief.

The play, originally performed in 1984, is set in that era. The clever set showcases beautiful floral and leather sofas and decorations that we all recognise from that period.

The play is set around Guy (Damian Humbley), a recent widower who joins the local amateur light operatic society, a dysfunctional group of quirky characters led by the enthusiastic Dafydd Ap Llewellyn, who is wonderfully portrayed by Robert Bowman, who is returning to Salisbury after appearing in The Tempest last year.

Bowman brings light and great humour to the role of the society's director. He has great comedic timing, both physically and when delivering his lines.

He spends almost as much time off-stage as he does on it; one scene with him off-stage is particularly well done.

There are stereotypes on show throughout the cast, and Andy Cryer brings a lovely light and humorous characterisation to Jarvis Huntley-Pike - one of the highlights amongst a strong cast.

Ben Stock spends much of his time behind the piano, bringing great facial expressions and eyebrow movements to highlight some of his character's (Mr Ames) quirks, whilst providing piano accompaniment to much of the play.

The play runs along at a nice pace, with some nice set pieces and some clever set design - the bar set takes you back to that time and pampas grass is a nice nod to the intentions of one couple as encounters evolve.

Guy joins the upcoming production of The Beggar’s Opera. Guy starts out playing a part with only one line, but his good looks and mild manners soon see him climb his way to the leading role.

Unable to say no to wine, women and song, Guy is embroiled in a series of backhand deals, steamy affairs and pub brawls.

A Chorus of Disapproval, directed by Gareth Machin, runs at Salisbury Playhouse until Saturday 18th May. You can buy tickets here - https://www.wiltshirecreative.co.uk/events/a-chorus-of-disapproval
