Amesbury community centre saved by local couple

Wyndham Hall in Amesbury has been bought by a local couple with the intention of making it available to hire for community use, classes, and private gatherings.

In May last year, The Diocese of Salisbury confirmed that the community hall was to be sold which caused concern among the local community and lead to a petition to save the hall started by the Wyndham Hall Action Group.

According to the action group, the hall has been a community asset for ten years after much fundraising by the people of Amesbury.

Now, the hall has been acquired by Christine and Richard Glover, who hope to protect the hall as an asset to be used for the community.

Christine Glover said, “Living near the hall we saw first-hand, how many people in our community valued having a local hall for classes and functions. We are convinced that it is needed by the local community and that it can be commercially viable, whilst being reasonably priced for everyone to hire.

"It also provides a well-ventilated space with adequate room for people to meet, during these difficult times, and COVID government guidance will be ensured.”

Mark Verbinnen and his wife Rachel, who together ran the hall before it closed in the middle of last year, have offered to rent and operate the Hall on behalf of the new owners.

Mark and Rachel still have all the contacts of previous users and are looking forward to welcoming them back, as well as other new users.

The news was well-received by local residents on social media who commented:

"Well done to all involved in saving Wyndham Hall. We had our wedding reception in Wyndham Hall and it's a very special place."

"Thank you Glovers. All the hard work by the community to refurbish the hall a few years ago will not be wasted, in spite of the C of E’s best efforts to prevent the hall being used for its original purpose."
