A disability café and stroke support group is coming to Salisbury

Two new community clubs for stroke survivors and anyone with a disability are coming to Salisbury this September.

In 2012 Kez Adey slipped a spinal disc, and after spinal surgery in 2013, she has been fighting chronic pain. During the pandemic, Kez started to campaign for the independence of those with a disability, with the support of the Silver Salisbury Programme.

“I realised the best way to meet more disabled people would be to start a drop-in café. Here you can meet others who struggle with different disabilities but still people who understand and don't judge,” said Kez.

And so The Disability Drop-in Cafe was born. The club is for anyone with a disability at the Harlequins Football Club (10am-12pm), and will begin on the 13th September, and run fortnightly thereafter.

“Many people with disabilities feel and live a lonely life and I want that to stop. I run 3 separate businesses that help and support those with disabilities to realise their beauty and confidence both inside and out, and I have come to realise I am not the only person who felt alone in this journey.

“Harlequins Football club has been very supportive to get this club up and running for the disabled community. What is a disability? That's down to the individual to decide,” explained Kez.

The Onward Club is for those who have survived a stroke and their family at Stratford sub Castle Scout Hut, and will run bi-weekly from 2nd September between 10am - 12pm.

“The Onward Club has been running for many years and just before Covid hit, I became the organiser of the club taking over from Brian Ford.

“At The Onward club, we have a range of games, guest speakers, fun, a cuppa and cake, as well as friendship. We also have a benefits advisor on hand if needed. This is a much-needed opportunity for those who have survived a stroke, and their families, to meet others in the area who have the same struggles.”
